Computer software is a general term used to describe a collection of computer programs, procedures and documentation that perform some tasks on a computer system. The term includes application software such as word processors which perform productive tasks for users, system software such as operating systems, which interface with hardware to provide the necessary services for application software, and middleware which controls and co-ordinates distributed systems.
You can install computer software in three ways:
- If you have a disc, you have to load it into the CD/DVD drive and let the computer auto-install the program. Most of the times, you will have an install wizard popup and run you through the installation process.
- You can also install the software from the start menu. On the start menu, you click on ‘Run’ option, and type the path of the installation file and click ‘OK’. You are not aware of the location; you can browse through files and folders, locate the installation file and then click ‘OK’. This should initiate the software installation. Later, the process will take you through a series of installation wizards which will help you install the software.
- If you do not have a CD or DVD of the software, you can download the software from the internet, and save it on your hard drive. Then you double click on the installation file which will take through a series of installation wizards before the installation is complete.
The installation process may take several minutes to few seconds depending on the file size. It is recommended that users go through the ‘Readme.txt’ file which has important information such as compatibility of software with Operating Systems, some known issues or limitations, and few tips and suggestions on using the software application. Some software may require reboot of the computer, and registration process. The registration is a process of registering your software with vendor to ensure that the software is a legitimate one.
